DIY Mini Split Installation: A How-To Guide!

A mini split-system air conditioner is a great way to keep your home cool and comfortable during the summer months. But before you can enjoy the benefits of this type of air conditioner, you need to know how to install it properly.

In this article, we’ll walk you through the process of installing a mini split-system air conditioner in your home. We’ll cover everything from choosing the right location for your unit to connecting it to your electrical system. By the time you’re finished reading, you’ll know everything you need to install your mini split-system air conditioner like a pro!

Choosing The Best Mini Split System:

When it comes to choosing a mini split-system air conditioner, there are a few things you’ll need to keep in mind. First, you’ll need to decide which type of unit is right for your home. There are three basic types of mini-split-system air-conditioners: single-zone, multi-zone, and dual-zone mini-split.

Single-zone mini-splits: As the name suggests, single-zone mini splits are designed to cool a single room or area of your home. If you only need to keep one room cool, then a single-zone unit is the way to go.

Multi-zone mini splits: Multi-zone mini-splits are ideal for cooling multiple rooms or areas of your home. If you have more than one room that needs to be cooled, then a multi-zone unit is the best option.

Dual-zone mini splits: Dual zone mini splits are similar to multi-zone units, but they allow you to independently control the temperature in each zone. This is perfect for homes with different temperature needs in different areas.

Once you’ve decided which type of unit is right for your home, you’ll need to choose the right size. Mini split-system air conditioners are available in a range of sizes, so it’s important to choose one that’s appropriate for the space you’re trying to cool.

The best way to determine the right size unit for your needs is to use a sizing calculator. There are many online sizing calculators available, so finding one should be easy. Simply enter the square footage of the area you want to cool and the calculator will do the rest.

Once you’ve chosen the right type and size of mini split-system air conditioner for your needs, it’s time to install it!

Installing Your Indoor Unit:

Step 1: Choose the right location:

The first step in installing your mini split-system air conditioner is to choose the right location for the indoor unit. The best place to install the indoor unit is in a central location within the room or area you want to cool. This will ensure that the air conditioner can evenly distribute cool air throughout the space.

Step 2: Drill holes for the refrigerant lines:

Once you’ve chosen the perfect location for your indoor unit, it’s time to drill holes for the refrigerant lines. These holes need to be small, so be sure to use a drill bit that’s appropriate for the size of your refrigerant lines.

Mark where you’ll need to drill the holes with a pencil and then use a drill to create pilot holes. Next, use a step bit to enlarge the holes to the appropriate size.

Step 3: Run the refrigerant lines through the holes:

Now that you’ve drilled the holes, it’s time to run the refrigerant lines through them. Start by threading the end of the refrigerant line through one of the holes. Then, feed the rest of the line through the other hole and into the indoor unit.

Make sure that there is enough slack in the line so that you can easily connect it to the outdoor unit later on. Once you’ve fed both lines through their respective holes, secure them in place with zip ties.

Step 4: Connect the indoor unit to your electrical system:

The next step in installing your mini split-system air conditioner is to connect the indoor unit to your electrical system. Most mini-splits require a 240-volt circuit, so be sure to check the requirements of your unit before you begin.

If you don’t have a 240-volt circuit in your home, you can install one by running a new line from your breaker box. Once you’ve installed the new circuit, simply connect it to the terminals on the indoor unit.

Step 5: Hang the indoor unit on the wall:

The last step in installing the indoor unit is to hang it on the wall. Most indoor units come with brackets that make this process easy. Simply line up the brackets with the holes on the back of the unit and use screws to secure them in place.

Now that the indoor unit is installed, it’s time to move on to the outdoor unit!

Installing Your Outdoor Unit:

Step 1: Choose the right location:

You will want to choose a location that is close to an exterior wall and has easy access to both electricity and a water source.

Step 2: Assemble your outdoor unit:

The outdoor unit of a mini-split system is composed of the compressor, condenser, and evaporator coils. You will need to assemble these three components before proceeding with the installation.

Step 3: Install the mounting bracket:

The mounting bracket is what will hold your outdoor unit in place. It is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when installing the bracket, as doing so incorrectly could result in damage to the unit.

Step 4: Hang the outdoor unit:

Once the mounting bracket is installed, you can hang the outdoor unit on it. Again, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when doing this.

Step 5: Connect the outdoor unit to the indoor unit:

The final step in installing your outdoor unit is to connect it to the indoor unit. This is usually done with a copper refrigerant line. Be careful not to damage the line when connecting it.
