Furnace vs Heat Pump: What’s the Difference?

Whenever we talk of heating and air conditioning replacement, many people ask about the difference between a furnace and a heat pump. While the two units have similar functions, this doesn’t make them the same. Ainsworth & Co. Air Conditioning – Heating describes the key differences between them here:

Heat Pump

A heat pump uses outside air to heat the house in the winter and cool it in the summer. This means that it acts as an air conditioner when the weather gets hot and a heater when it’s cold outside. In the winter, the pump extracts heat from the outdoor air and distributes it within your house. In the summer, it moves hot air from the inside of your home to the outside, creating a cooler indoor environment.

A furnace burns fuel to produce heat and distributes it throughout the house. Heating systems run using either gas or oil as fuel, or a hybrid packaged system which can use both fuel types. Let Ainsworth & Co. Air Conditioning – Heating inspect your furnace for efficiency. We can provide repairs or a furnace replacement.

Comparing the Two

A gas furnace is cheaper to install than a heat pump. However, a furnace must work in conjunction with an air conditioner to condition the air in your home, whereas a heat pump can handle both functions. A heat pump transfers heat into the house from the outdoors rather than producing it on its own. Heat pumps don’t use combustion, so don’t produce any harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Also, they circulate humid air that doesn’t dry out your skin as much as the heat from furnaces does.
